This is the phrase people are much more likely to search. Then, throughout the article, we’ll naturally mention your Teddy Bear Schnoodles and Teddy Bear Twoodles so those breeds are represented as well.
Why Temperament Matters More Than Color When Choosing a Goldendoodle Puppy
When most families begin searching for a Goldendoodle puppy, one of the very first questions we hear is:
“Do you have a red female?”
Or…
“I’m looking for the darkest puppy in the litter.”
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having preferences. We all fall in love with a puppy’s adorable face, beautiful coat, or unique markings.
But after helping thousands of families over the years, we’ve learned something that surprises many people:
The puppy you’ll love the most 10–15 years from now probably won’t be the one you chose because of color. It will be the one whose temperament was the perfect fit for your family.
At Smeraglia Teddy Bear Goldendoodles, beautiful puppies capture your attention—but wonderful temperaments capture your heart for a lifetime.
What Is Temperament?
Temperament is much more than whether a puppy is calm or playful.
Temperament is a combination of personality traits that help predict how a puppy may respond to life, learning, children, other pets, new environments, and everyday situations.
These characteristics include things like:
• Confidence
• Curiosity
• Human focus
• Energy level
• Recovery after new experiences
• Problem-solving ability
• Trainability
• Emotional stability
• Social interaction with littermates
• Desire to work with people
These qualities often have a much greater impact on your family’s happiness than coat color or markings ever will.
Our Temperament Evaluations Begin Early
One thing that makes the Smeraglia program different is that our temperament evaluations begin as soon as our puppies’ eyes open.
From that point forward, we begin learning who each puppy is—not only as an individual but also within the litter.
Unlike programs that perform one temperament test at seven or eight weeks of age, we continuously observe our puppies throughout their development.
Every veterinary examination, every vaccination, every wellness visit, every medical treatment, every enrichment exercise, every handling session, and every new experience gives us valuable information about each puppy’s personality.
Rather than relying on a single evaluation, we build a complete picture over many weeks.
As our puppies grow, we carefully observe qualities such as:
• Puppies that naturally seek out people
• Puppies with exceptional scenting ability and a strong natural nose
• Puppies that naturally maintain eye contact and enjoy human interaction
• Puppies that recover quickly after a new or unexpected experience
• Puppies with appropriate confidence
• Puppies with balanced energy levels
• Puppies that show patience and tolerance during handling
• Puppies that interact appropriately with their littermates
• Puppies that enjoy learning and solving problems
• Puppies that naturally demonstrate qualities that may make them excellent service or therapy dog candidates
Every puppy is unique.
There isn’t one “perfect temperament.”
There is simply the temperament that’s the best fit for a particular family and lifestyle.
Matching Puppies to Families
At Smeraglia, we believe matching the right puppy is one of the most important parts of the adoption journey.
A retired couple may thrive with a calm, easygoing companion.
A family with young children may be happiest with a confident, playful puppy.
An active family may enjoy a puppy with higher energy and enthusiasm.
Families hoping for a future service or therapy dog may benefit from puppies that naturally demonstrate the qualities we look for during our ongoing temperament evaluations.
That’s why our goal isn’t simply to let families choose a puppy based on appearance.
Our goal is to help families choose the puppy that will fit their life for years to come.

Exceptional temperaments change lives.
Building on a Great Foundation
Natural temperament is only the beginning.
Our Doodle Prep School builds on that foundation by introducing puppies to confidence-building exercises, socialization, new environments, problem-solving activities, and the skills they’ll need to transition successfully into family life.

Service & Therapy Dog Candidates
One of the reasons temperament is so important is because certain puppies naturally demonstrate qualities that make them exceptional candidates for future service or therapy work.
While we do not provide fully trained service or therapy dogs, our temperament evaluations help us identify puppies that possess many of the characteristics families and professional trainers often look for.

Finding the Right Puppy
When choosing your next puppy, we encourage families to think beyond color.
Instead, ask yourself:
• What is our family’s lifestyle?
• Do we have young children?
• Are we active?
• Is this our first dog?
• Do we want a calm companion?
• Are we hoping for a puppy that may be well suited for therapy or service work?
The answers to those questions are often far more important than whether your puppy is red, apricot, cream, or parti.
