EXPERIENCE THE SMERAGLIA DIFFERENCE

What is a Service Dog Companion?

An Assistance dog, also known as a service dog in the United States, is a dog trained to aid or assist an individual with a disability. They are trained to perform tasks for a disabled individual who would otherwise have trouble completing those tasks. A service “assistant” dog is expressly trained to assist with his human partner’s particular disabilities. These are the Heroes of our Smeraglia breeding program and are at the heart of all we do.

Training Pets into Service Dogs!

Our English Goldendoodles, Schnoodles & Twoodles can be trained to be excellent Service dogs. Their intelligence, temperament and allergy-friendly characteristics are the result of years of careful and intentional breeding. Our goal as a breeder is to produce puppies that will become a lifelong partner that will assist their human partner’s particular disabilities.
We evaluate every puppy that is born at Smeraglia to determine which ones have the best temperaments to become service dog candidates. These puppies are then eligible to be matched with potential clients in need of a service dog.
Our primary areas of focus in training Service dogs are:

• PTSD Dogs
• Emotional Support Dogs
• Comfort Dogs
• Diabetic Alert Dogs
• Epilepsy Alert Dogs
• Autism Support Dogs – Learn More about our Pawtism Program.
• Basic Service Dogs trained specifically to assist the needs of our special needs clients, primarily children.

If you are in need of a trained service dog, you will first need to submit the online application. Once your application is approved, we will set up a telephone conference with you to determine if we can meet your specific needs.

Emotional support, Comfort & Autism Companions

Emotional support, Comfort & Autism dogs help individuals with emotional disabilities, such as anxiety or depression, by providing comfort and support. Federal law does not require these animals to have any specific training, but we require all of our Emotional Support Dogs to go through at least 8 weeks of our Foundational Puppy Training Program. NOTE: This doesn’t NOT make them Service Dogs and they do not have public access rights under the ADA law. ESA’s and Companion dogs are only allowed in places that allow general pets, not in “non-pet friendly locations” or “service dog only” locations.

* A note from a licensed mental health provider or doctor is frequently required for housing and always for airline travel.

Emotional Support , Comfort & Autism Dogs:

• Should have good social skills if taken in PET FRIENDLY public places. (NOTE: ESA’S AND COMFORT ANIMALS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN NON-PET FRIENDLY LOCATIONS)
• Are allowed in all housing regardless of pet policy, with any pet deposit or pet rent being waived with PROPER MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION
• Are allowed to fly with you AS A PET, as long as they can fit under your seat IN AN CARRIER. PET FEE’S MAY APPLY. *

AUTISM COMPANIONS

The Pawtism Project

Smeraglia’s Therapy & Service dogs can be trained to help people with all kinds of conditions including autism, diabetes, and for emotional support, but they need a special place to learn. That’s where the Pawtism Program comes in, allowing Smeraglia’s Teddy Bear Goldendoodles & Schnoodles and students in our local schools to learn together in ways that help everyone!

TYPES OF THERAPY DOGS

We’ve trained hundreds of Therapy Dogs at Smeraglia’s Doodle Prep School. We’d love to train a very special puppy partner for you as well!

Therapeutic Visitation Dogs

Types of Therapy Dogs

The first and most common are Therapeutic Visitation Dogs. These dogs are household pets whose owners take time to visit hospitals, nursing homes, detention and rehabilitation facilities. Visitation dogs help people who have to be away from home due to mental or physical illness, or court order. These people may miss their own pets. A visit from a Visitation Dog can brighten their day, lift their spirits, and help motivate them in their therapy or treatment.

The incredibly rare spotted, wookie-parti golden doodle bred by Smeraglia teddy bear golden doodles is an amazing sight to behold! Its beautiful coat of fur is a mix of different shades of color, and it has adorable floppy ears that make it look like a teddy bear.

Animal Assisted Therapy Dogs

Types of Therapy Dogs

The second type of Therapy Dog is an Animal Assisted Therapy Dog. These dogs assist physical and occupational therapists in meeting goals important to a person's recovery. Tasks that a dog can help achieve include gaining motion in limbs, fine motor control, or regaining pet care skills for caring for pets at home. Animal Assisted Therapy Dogs usually work in rehabilitation facilities.

Facility Therapy Dogs

Types of Therapy Dogs

The last type of Therapy Dog is a Facility Therapy Dog. These dogs primarily work in nursing homes and are often trained to help keep patients with Alzheimer's disease or other mental illness from getting into troubling situations. They are handled by a trained member of the staff and live at the facility.
