““Which Goldendoodle Size Is Best for Your Family?””

One of the most common questions we hear at Teddy Bear Goldendoodles is:

“What size Goldendoodle should I get?”

The answer might surprise you.

After spending decades matching families with their perfect companion, I’ve learned that there isn’t one “best” size. There is only the size that best fits your home, your lifestyle, and your dreams for the years ahead.

Some people love tiny lap dogs. Others, like me, love a big dog with lots of substance. Neither is right or wrong.

The key is finding the size that fits your family.

First, Let’s Talk About Size

Most families ask about weight, so that’s usually how we discuss size. While organizations like the AKC often classify dogs by height, weight is what most people can easily visualize and understand.

Keep in mind that weight can vary. A dog can be naturally smaller or larger than average, and dogs can gain weight if overfed. That’s why size categories are intended as guides rather than guarantees.

At Teddy Bear Goldendoodles, our size categories generally include:

Extra Small
Small
Medium
Large

Each has its own advantages.

Extra Small: Tiny Companions with Big Personalities

Our Extra Small doodles are often what people picture when they dream of a little companion that can go almost anywhere.

In our own family, Lauren has Lily and Lola. Natalie has Martini, affectionately known as “Teeny.” Joseph and Alyssa have Phoebe. Some of these little dogs are under 10 pounds fully grown.

They fit beautifully into everyday life. They’re easy to travel with, easy to pick up, and love being close to their people.

Extra Smalls are often a wonderful fit for:

Retirees
Apartment living
Frequent travelers
Families wanting a true lap dog

Don’t let their size fool you—they often have enormous personalities.

Small: The Perfect In-Between

Small doodles offer many of the same conveniences as an Extra Small while providing a little more size and sturdiness.

They’re still easy to travel with and manage, but some families appreciate the slightly larger frame, especially if they have children.

For many first-time doodle owners, a Small can be an excellent choice.

Medium: Our Most Popular Size

If there is one size that seems to fit the greatest number of families, it’s the Medium.

Medium doodles have enough size to feel substantial while still fitting comfortably into most homes and lifestyles.

They are large enough to enjoy adventures, family activities, and outdoor fun, but not so large that they overwhelm the average household.

That’s why Mediums continue to be the most requested size among our families.

For many homes, they provide the perfect balance.

Large: More Dog, More Love

Now we’re talking about my personal favorite.

I love big dogs.

Our boy Fletcher is around 80 pounds, and there’s something special about a big doodle. They have a presence about them. There’s more dog to hug, more dog to lean against you, and more dog to love.

Large doodles often develop deep bonds with their families and can make incredible companions, therapy dogs, and adventure partners.

Of course, with a larger dog comes greater responsibility. They need more room, larger beds, larger crates, and often larger vehicles for travel.

But if you have the space and love a substantial dog, a Large Goldendoodle can be absolutely wonderful.

What Are Your Goals?

Before choosing a size, ask yourself a few questions:

Do you travel frequently?
Do you want a dog that can easily accompany you everywhere?
Will this dog primarily be a family companion?
Are you interested in therapy work or service work?
Do you have small children?
How much space do you have at home?
Do you simply prefer a smaller or larger dog?

Your answers matter more than any size chart.

It’s Not Just About Your House—It’s About Your Life

When families call us, we aren’t just thinking about square footage.

We’re thinking about your daily life.

Do you spend weekends on the road? Do you fly often? Do you enjoy hiking and outdoor adventures? Are you looking for a cuddle companion who will sit in your lap while you read a book? Do you need a dog that can comfortably visit hospitals, schools, or nursing homes for therapy work?

All of those things matter.

The right size is the one that naturally fits the life you’re already living.

The Truth About “The Best Size”

One of my favorite examples is Joseph and Alyssa’s home.

They have Phoebe, an Extra Small, and Milo, a Large. They couldn’t be more different in size, yet they fit beautifully into the same family.

That perfectly illustrates the point.

There is no universally perfect size.

At Teddy Bear Goldendoodles, we don’t try to convince families that one size is better than another. We simply help you discover which size fits your life best.

Whether that’s a tiny companion like Martini, an adaptable Medium, or a big teddy bear like Fletcher, the right doodle is the one that feels like home when they curl up beside you.

And that comes in every size.

Let Us Help You Decide

If you’re still wondering which size is right for your family, we’d love to help.

Choosing a puppy is about so much more than picking a color or a weight range. It’s about finding a companion that fits naturally into your home, your lifestyle, and the dreams you have for the years ahead.

Our Adoption Specialists can walk you through the decision, answer your questions, and help you think through everything from travel and family life to therapy work, service work, activity levels, and everyday companionship.

Sometimes a family calls thinking they want an Extra Small and discovers a Medium is a better fit. Other times they fall in love with the idea of a Large doodle and realize they have the space and lifestyle to enjoy every bit of that extra dog to love.

Whatever your situation, we’re here to help.

Give us a call and let one of our Adoption Specialists walk through your options with you. We’d be honored to help you find the Teddy Bear Goldendoodle that’s just right for your family.

After all, the goal isn’t simply finding a puppy.

It’s finding the right puppy for your life.
