““The Origin of the English Goldendoodle”””

Understanding the Golden Retriever, the Standard Poodle, and Where It All Began

There’s a lot of conversation today around doodles—especially Goldendoodles—and even more around terms like “English Golden Retriever” and “English Goldendoodle.”

But very few people truly understand where these dogs came from…
and more importantly, what’s behind them.

At Smeraglia Farm, everything we do is intentional.
And to understand the English Goldendoodle, you have to go back to the beginning.

Part One: Where the Term “English Golden Retriever” Came From

Today, the term “English Golden Retriever” is widely used.

But what most people don’t realize is this:

👉 That term did not exist in the marketplace before it was introduced through early work at Smeraglia Farm.

When I first began importing European Golden Retrievers—from countries such as the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and other parts of Europe—people immediately noticed something different.

They would say:

“These don’t look like the Golden Retrievers we’re used to.”
“Why are they so light?”
“Why are their heads so much fuller?”

At the time, there was no common language to describe these dogs.

So I did what needed to be done—I gave people a way to understand what they were seeing.

👉 I began using the term:
“English Golden Retriever”

to distinguish these European bloodline Goldens from the more commonly seen American lines.

That terminology spread—because it made sense.

And today, it is recognized across the country.

What “English” Actually Refers To

Scientifically, there is only one breed:

👉 The Golden Retriever

But within that breed, there are different bloodlines.

The dogs people refer to as “English Golden Retrievers” are typically:

Imported from Europe
Bred from UK-based lineage standards
Known for their distinct look and temperament

These dogs tend to have:

Lighter, cream-colored coats
Blockier, fuller heads
Heavier bone structure
Often a more balanced, calm disposition

The True Origin of the Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers were originally developed in Scotland in the 1800s by Lord Tweedmouth.

His goal was to create a dog that could:

Retrieve game from land and water
Work closely with people
Remain calm, intelligent, and dependable

The foundation included:

A Yellow Retriever
The Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct)

That water spaniel influence is still present today—and it’s one of the primary reasons:

👉 These dogs naturally love water

Part Two: The Standard Poodle—A True Working Dog

The second half of the Goldendoodle is equally important—and often misunderstood.

The Standard Poodle originated in Germany, not France.

The name comes from the German word:

👉 “Pudel” — meaning “to splash in water”

From the beginning, the Poodle was bred as a:

👉 Water retriever

Their purpose was to:

Retrieve waterfowl
Swim efficiently in cold conditions
Work closely with hunters
Respond quickly to direction and training

What the Poodle Brings Genetically

The Standard Poodle contributes several critical traits:

🧠 Intelligence

One of the most intelligent breeds in the world—highly trainable and quick to learn.

💧 Water Drive

Natural swimmers with strong retrieving instincts.

🧬 Coat Structure

A low-shedding, curly coat that forms the foundation of the doodle coat.

❤️ Temperament

Loyal, attentive, and deeply connected to people.

Part Three: The Origin of the English Goldendoodle

Now we come to where these two foundations meet.

At Smeraglia Farm, the goal was never simply to “create a doodle.”

It was to build something intentional, purposeful, and elevated.

By combining:

European (“English-type”) Golden Retrievers
WITH
Standard Poodles

We developed a dog that carries forward the very best of both.

What Makes the English Goldendoodle Different

When you start with European Golden Retriever bloodlines and pair them with carefully selected Standard Poodles, you create something very specific:

👉 A dog that is:

Naturally drawn to water
Highly intelligent and trainable
Balanced in temperament
Beautiful in coat and structure
Deeply connected to people

This combination is not accidental.

👉 It is informed, selective, and purpose-driven.

Where It Truly Began

The English Goldendoodle didn’t come from a trend.

It came from:

Recognizing the difference in European Golden Retrievers
Giving that difference a name
And intentionally pairing those dogs with Standard Poodles

👉 That work began here.
👉 At Smeraglia Farm.

From Working Dogs to Life-Changing Companions

There was a time when dogs were essential to everyday survival.

They weren’t just companions—they were working partners.

They helped people:

Hunt for food
Retrieve game from land and water
Herd livestock
Pull carts
Protect homes and property

But today, the world looks different.

We no longer rely on dogs for survival in the same way previous generations did.

You still see glimpses of it—
in hunting, in herding, in detection work—

But something powerful has happened over time.

👉 The role of the dog has evolved.

A New Kind of Purpose

Today, some of the most important work dogs do is not in the field…

It’s with people.

Service dogs changing the lives of individuals with disabilities
Therapy dogs bringing comfort, peace, and emotional healing
Dogs supporting families in ways that go far beyond what we once imagined

And the reason this is possible comes back to what these breeds were always known for:

👉 Their connection to humans

Their attentiveness
Their loyalty
Their intelligence
Their desire to work with us

Our Mission at Smeraglia Farm

At Smeraglia Farm, this is at the heart of everything we do.

We are not just breeding dogs.

👉 We are trainers who breed dogs with intention—so we can train them to fulfill their purpose.

Every decision we make begins with the end in mind.

We are developing dogs that:

Are instinctively driven
Highly trainable
Mentally sound
Deeply connected to people

Because training doesn’t start later…

👉 It starts in the genetics.

Why That Matters

You can’t take just any dog and expect it to become:

A service dog
A therapy dog
A life-changing companion

Those abilities have to be bred in first.

That’s why we focus so heavily on:

Bloodlines
Temperament
Structure
Natural instinct

So that when training begins…

👉 The dog is already wired to succeed.

At Smeraglia Farm

We don’t separate breeding from training.

👉 They are one and the same.

We breed dogs so they can be trained.
And we train dogs that were intentionally bred to do the work.

Our goal is simple, but powerful:

To create dogs that are instinctively equipped to change lives—
through service, therapy, and true human connection.

If you’re looking for more than just a pet…

If you’re looking for a dog that is born with purpose and trained to fulfill it—

That is exactly what we do at Smeraglia Farm.
