Okay y’all… we’ve got to talk for a minute.
Because I’ve now had multiple clients casually say to me,
“We’re cloning our dog…”
And I’m sitting there thinking—
Wait… we’re doing what now? 😄
So of course, it made me pause. And if you know me, when something makes me pause, I start digging.
Not because I’m planning anything—but because I’m genuinely curious about where this is headed… for all of us.
What Dog Cloning Actually Is
At its core, dog cloning starts with a small skin sample taken from a dog while they’re still alive. Those cells are preserved, and later, the DNA is inserted into a donor egg.
That embryo is then placed into a surrogate dog, and about 60 days later… a puppy is born with the same genetic makeup.
Now here’s something important—and honestly, something I had to learn myself:
👉 Cloning does not produce a litter of identical puppies.
Each puppy is created individually.
So even though a surrogate dog could carry multiple puppies, cloning is done one embryo at a time. If someone wanted more than one clone, each one would be created separately.
You wouldn’t suddenly have a whole litter of your dog…
You would have one puppy at a time, sharing the same DNA—but not the same life.
The Breeder in Me Is Fascinated
There’s no denying—the science is incredible.
As breeders, we spend years building lines, protecting traits, and striving for excellence. The idea of preserving that at the highest level… it makes you stop and think.
There’s a part of me that sees the value in that.
But the Deeper Part of Me Pauses
Because after doing this for so many years, I know something that goes beyond genetics:
What makes a dog special isn’t just what’s in them… it’s what happens to them.
It’s:
* The home they’re placed in
* The people they bond with
* The timing of when they enter someone’s life
* The experiences that shape them
You could recreate the DNA…
But you can’t recreate the journey.
And that’s where I slow down a little.
Because I do believe there’s something meaningful about timing… about connection… about the way certain dogs come into our lives exactly when we need them.
Why I Understand It
At the same time, I completely understand the heart behind it.
When someone has had that once-in-a-lifetime dog…
The one that carried them through something…
The one that felt like more than just a pet…
Of course they don’t want to lose that completely.
That desire to hold onto something meaningful—it’s real.
Where I Land (For Now)
I’m not here to judge it.
And I’m not here to fully embrace it either.
I’m just paying attention.
Because I do believe this is something we’re going to see more of—and it may shape breeding, genetics, and even how people think about their dogs.
But for me, what we do at Smeraglia has always been about something deeper.
It’s about:
* The right dog
* In the right home
* At the right time
And I still believe there’s something about that process that can’t be manufactured.
Let’s Talk About It
So now I’m really curious…
Would you ever consider cloning your dog?
Or would you choose not to?
Tell me why.
This is an open conversation—no judgment here. I truly just want to hear your heart on it.
I want to understand where families are today… what you’re thinking, what you’re feeling… and honestly, where this might be going.
Because I think we’re standing at the beginning of something—and I’d love to walk through it together.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through my blog. Every word penned here comes straight from my heart, as I aim to share with you the knowledge and insights I’ve gathered over the years.
