How the Teddy Bear Schnoodle and English Goldendoodle Came to Be

Let me share a story with you, a real slice of life from our family at Smeraglia Farm. It’s a story about love, surprises, and finding unexpected solutions to tough problems. This tale centers around my son, Lukas, the third of my five wonderful children, and how his arrival shone a light on a challenge we hadn’t faced before: severe dog allergies.

Unlike his older siblings, Lukas struggled with allergies from a very young age. It was tough to see him suffer, especially since dogs are such a big part of our family life. I was actually raising and showing my English golden at that time . I loved my baby boy and was desperate to find a way for him to enjoy the companionship of a dog without the sneezes and sniffles.

At the same time, my daughter Lauren and her friend Elizabeth, our neighbor, each had their own beloved pets. Lauren’s was Lexie, a spirited Schnauzer, and Elizabeth’s was Preppy, a charming Miniature Poodle. These two dogs ended up having puppies together, which wasn’t planned at all. We like to think of it as a bit of divine intervention.

When Lukas interacted with these puppies without any allergic reactions, a lightbulb went off in my head. It sparked an idea and a hope that maybe, just maybe, we could breed a dog that Lukas and others with similar allergies could enjoy. This unexpected event led us to create the first Teddy Bear Schnoodle, a breed that marked a turning point for us in terms of dog breeding.

But the innovation didn’t stop there. Inspired by the hypoallergenic qualities of Lexie and Preppy’s puppies, I started to wonder if we could achieve something similar with our English Goldens. That curiosity and hope laid the groundwork for the birth of the Teddy Bear English Goldendoodle.
